The updated version of Analogue's Pocket console is now offered in-store. Because this version of their FPGA console is built of aluminum, everything it strikes will sustain more harm than it would if you elect to wield it like a brick.
The new Analogue Pocket functions identically to its plastic sibling, with the exception of materials. It seems as if every accessory is compatible with it. But it's composed of stronger materials. Precisely one solid billet of 6061 aluminum. Whatever it may be. The main thing is that it's made of metal and can play Game Boy games.
You'll probably hesitate when you see the $499 price tag. That amounts to almost double the cost of a standard-issue device, which is already a very expensive acquisition. To be honest, the higher-end vintage console market is the intended audience for Analogue's FPGA consoles. There are plenty of lower-end solutions available if the price makes you lose your mind. It is composed of robust metal, so it should survive for a while at least. Consider it a modern-day family heirloom. Something your favorite kid or underling may inherit.
For the Analogue NT, they also completed the aluminum treatment a long time ago.
I've been close to purchasing an Analogue Pocket a few times, but I always back out when I realize how many other things I would need to buy. I don't actually play portable games very much, and I'd probably simply use my Super Game Boy if I wanted to play a Game Boy game. I would thus need to purchase a dock separately if I wanted to get acclimated to it. After delivery, I would need the adaptor to play my Atari Lynx and Game Gear games, which would put me over $500. That would be in USD instead of my usual Canadian Loonies.
Please understand that I believe Analogue produces excellent consoles. I have an excellent Analogue Duo that I use for my Turbografx-16 and PC-Engine games. All of my financial responsibilities keep me from often engaging in these kind of ostentatious expenditures.
