You'll never hear me say it, but Stardew Valley fishing is fun for me.

I promise that you have played a fishing minigame at some time, no matter what genre you choose. They cannot be stopped. Most of the time, I can't tolerate them, and they can be found anyplace there's a body of water and time to kill.

Fishing minigames are the worst. I've never kept it a secret, and anyone who know me will tell you that I will do all in my power to stay away from fantasy fishing. This presents a little issue since I usually like "cozy" games, which almost always have a fishing mechanism. I've been forced to level Fisher and engage in Ocean Fishing even while playing Final Fantasy XIV, but I've never done so without griping the whole time.

The main thing I have to complain about is how boring the work is. Simply choose a location, push a button, and the line is cast. After then, you should wait. When a fish bites, you just push the button one more to land the catch. Even with the timed clicks, this kind of gaming isn't that exciting. The timing becomes into muscle memory, and fishing seems so natural. Bland.

This brings me to the problem I'm currently having: fishing in Stardew Valley seems to be attracting my attention, even though I've been purposefully avoiding it for years to the point where my fiancé had to come to my farm to finish the fishing bundles for me because I would not lift a rod.

As Stardew Valley happenedLike many other gamers, I created a fresh save file when 1.6 dropped. Never having picked up a fishing rod, I went about my life in Pelican Town, marveling at the wonders of the new Blue Grass and choosing the new farm. However, I did finish the bundles, due to my patient fiancé.

I had a guest when I got up on the first day of Spring in the next year. Everyone's favorite scruffy Fisherman, Willy, knocked on my door and asked why I didn't appear to be engaging in his favorite activity. He gave me a Training Rod instead, realizing I had no answers for him. Through his conversation box, I could practically sense his displeasure.

Even after this humiliation, I stayed away from the sport. My fishing ability stayed at the bottom until midway through the second summer, when I realized that I had to level up my own fishing skill and couldn't depend on anybody else to do it for me in order to visit the Mastery Cave and get the delectable prizes. Sadly, I would have to go fishing and swallow my pride.

Trout Derby, my first fishing experience in Stardew Valley

I tried, grudgingly. I had never gone fishing before, and I did not perform well during the Trout Derby. Sure, I caught some fish, but it was a terrible experience—I didn't catch any trout. After capturing my sixth bream, I was so incredibly frustrated that I rushed home without receiving any prizes. Positively, I managed to get one Fishing level from it, so all was not lost.

Then a few events took place:

  • I unlocked Mr. Raccoon and realised I’d need a Smoker, the recipe for which contains three things that can only be gained through fishing
  • I started unlocking higher quality fishing rods and more useful bobbers
  • I attended Squid Fest

It was Squid Fest that made it happen for me, as I realized how nearly pleasurable fishing might be. Each time I made a flawless catch or nailed a maximum throw. Defying the squid as they attempted to break free from my line and determining, just by its behavior, what kind of fish I was capturing throughout the mini-game It satisfied .. I received my Squid Hat, hit an Iridium score on both days, and had a great feeling of success.

To my dismay, I discovered that I wanted to go fishing more and that I would make special efforts to go fishing at certain times of the day. Even if it's only for the Mastery, I want to go to level 10 and capture every fish the game has to offer. I never imagined I'd say this, but even the legendary ones. On my farm, I even have a whole area set out for items connected to fishing.

The next time I start a new save file, I'll be able to finish the Fishing bundles by myself, which will definitely be a little different from my previous save files. I'm no longer avoiding the fishing quests on the board outside Pierre's or the Special Orders board outside Mayor Lewis' house.

Alright, I'll confess it. In Stardew Valley, I like to go fishing. It's tough, gratifying, and keeps you alert even though it's not quite intuitive. It's enjoyable, but it can be quite irritating when you lose a fish and enragesome when your gear breaks or you run out of bait when you need it most. Just to get here, it's taken me a very long time, a lot of denial, and some humiliation in front of Willy.
