According to reports, Sony took the 8K insignia off of the PlayStation 5 boxes. Since the 2020 console launch, the 8K logo has been included on the PS5 box. The business just needed four years to get rid of rumors about the console's (as of yet) nonexistent functionality.
A Reddit member noticed the change and shared comparison photos of two PS5 boxes, one of which featured the 8K logo and the other did not. PlayStation Lifestyle was the first to report the change.
Four years have passed since the release of the PS5 system software upgrade that would have enabled the 8K display, despite Sony's FAQ blog from 2020 indicating that it would happen later. According to reports from earlier in February of this year, Sony senior vice president Naomi Matsuoka said that the PS5 had reached the “latter stages” of its life cycle. It seems that the PS5, which has been on the market for four years, is nearing the end of its useful life, therefore the 8K resolution may not make it to the console in the end.
The removal of the PS5 designation to allow the PS5 Pro to be advertised as an 8K enabled console instead may have been motivated by fans' belief that the long-rumored PS5 Pro would have 8K resolution as one of its features. Although PlayStation players are outraged about the situation, Xbox Series X owners are probably feeling the same way. According to Microsoft, the Xbox Series X is also capable of supporting 8K displays; however, this capability has to be updated on the device.
Currently, the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 basic consoles do not include the 8K display. It seems that 8K will take some time to become as commonplace as 4K, since the 8K display resolution has not yet gained traction in gaming or entertainment and there are now few 8K TVs available on the market.
