A new version of 1997's MS-DOS title Fight'n'Jokes was published today by Mental Drink; to the best of my knowledge, this version has nothing to do with 2017's Fight'n Rage. With internet multiplayer and rollback netcode, this re-release is rather rich. That would be going all out.
I, too, had never heard of Fight'n'Jokes. The Street Fighter II from 1991 had a huge influence on the gaming business, which is why there were a ton of fighting games in the '90s trying to cash in on that sweet, sweet success. A few parodies, such as Clay Fighter and Brutal: Paws of Fury, were also produced as a consequence of this. But DOS wasn't exactly the most popular platform for combat games. A typical prerequisite for being considered seriously was an arcade release. The genuineness behind this Fight'n'Jokes re-release was what really drew my attention. The initial release was the result of the effort of around five individuals, but even so, it looks decent for a late DOS game and has most of the elements you would expect from a combat game. It is true that there are two buttons (plus a charge button), however many NeoGeo Pocket fighting games, such as SNK vs. Capcom: The Match of the Millennium, also have two buttons. It simply punches above its weight class, not that it's wonderful.
There are eleven levels and ten characters total, four of which may be unlocked. The controls may be remapped to make it compatible with an arcade stick. It seems humorous merely from the name, but it's really just cartoonish, like a comic strip from a newspaper. It is really described as "semi-humorous" in the press release, which is approximately accurate. The brothers that created Fight'n'Jokes and Nasty Brothers Software are still involved with Mental Drink. The game has been ported to a new engine for the re-release, which operates on contemporary operating systems natively. Not to mention online multiplayer, that's a difficult task. It demonstrates just how much they care about the little title. Online multiplayer was absent from the Switch and Xbox One versions when it was first released. To match the PC version, a patch will be applied to the console versions. On PC, Fight'n'Jokes is now accessible. Despite being labeled as Early Access, the main game has been finished. Mental Drink is only seeking input about their performance on the internet.
