The Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga has finally been released, bringing the whole Mad Max series back into the public eye. The first film in the series was Mad Max., directed by George Miller, in 1979. Since then, it has grown into a global multimedia powerhouse known for its distinctive appearance and many strange and bizarre characters.
But that doesn't mean the Mad Max series is flawless, even with its colorful cast and expansive universe. There is a lot of territory to cover with auxiliary media like books, video games, and comics, and the mythology and general timing are a little unclear. For those who are unfamiliar with Miller's post-apocalyptic world, it may thus seem intimidating.
Here is what you should see at the very least before seeing Miller's most recent work if you're one of those newbies who was drawn in by the chaotic, action-packed Furiosa but doesn't want to watch every single Mad Max movie in order to prepare.
An excellent place to start is Mad Max: Fury Road
Mad Max: Fury Road is a visually magnificent and intense film that was released in 2015. It revolves on Max Rockatansky (Tom Hardy), who becomes entangled in a conflict between Imperator Furiosa (Charlize Theron) and Immortan Joe (Hugh Keays-Byrne), the evil dictator of the Citadel. With its action, drama, and worldbuilding, this is her first appearance in the Mad Max series, and it's a very good one. Ultimately, it was enough to get Hideo Kojima view it four times. There is a case to be made for saving Fury Road until after a Furiosa screening since, in terms of the Mad Max chronology, it takes place years after Furiosa. Nevertheless, seeing it beforehand may make Furiosa a more engaging watch. The genesis narrative of the main character becomes more intriguing since we know who she eventually becomes ahead of time. Knowing her ultimate shape and seeing her journey to get there might be satisfying. Imagine seeing Anakin Skywalker's transformation into Darth Vader in the Star Wars prequels, which take place decades after the original trilogy ends.
Not to add, Fury Road is comparable in tone and style if you're not sure what you're getting into stylistically with Furiosa. In that sense, it may serve as a useful primer as well. After exploring Fury Road, if you're feeling peckish, you may visit Furiosa to satisfy your cravings.
You are not required to see the original Mad Max trilogy
The original Mad Max trilogy's impact on pop culture and general science fiction greatness cannot be disputed. Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior, Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, and Mad Max are all still worth seeing decades after their initial releases, and Mel Gibson's portrayal of Max Rockatansky is still recognizable. That being said, these films aren't really necessary to see Furiosa.
The Mad Max trilogy may be seen before Furiosa mostly due to time constraints. The settings of Furiosa and Fury Road are in the middle of the twenty-first century, whereas the original trilogy took place in the middle of the 1980s and ended in the early 2000s. Given the enormous differences in their characters and chronological distance, skipping on the trilogy will have very little effect on your comprehension of Furiosa in terms of the central plot.
There could be no connection between Furiosa and the original trilogy
.But what if all you desire is to know all there is to know about the mythology of this world? Even yet, you could still be better off ignoring the trilogy or treating it separately. It's still up for debate whether the first three Mad Max films really take place in the same universe as Furiosa and Fury Road. Fans are still debating if Gibson and Hardy are the same Max, whether they are connected, or whether the moniker is more of a mantel handed down from person to person. Miller hasn't released a definitive decision.
All of that to say, if you wanted to, you could watch all of the current Mad Max movies in order to be ready for Furiosa. However, if all you're looking for is narrative coherence, your best strategy would be to stick to Fury Road by itself. It forms a tremendously interesting duology with Furiosa, with which it links in closely.Currently, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is the only film available for viewing in cinemas.
