The last goodbye to a Downtown Nekketsu icon
Miracle Kidz!, a Japanese developer, has shared the tragic news that Mitsuhiro Yoshida, the company president, died "suddenly" on August 30. Having worked in the video game business for many years, Yoshida is most recognized for co-directing River City Ransom, one of the most played brawlers ever.
Though he and co-director Hiroyuki Sekimoto may not have been the driving forces behind the creation of the Kunio-kun franchise, Yoshida is regarded by his Miracle Kidz! colleagues as the "father" of the Downtown Nekketsu franchise and directed its most popular and widely viewed installment. River City Ransom, sometimes referred to as Downtown Nekketsu Monogatari in its original Japan, was one of the first games on the NES to combine a non-linear RPG framework with the series' action-packed, side-scrolling gameplay. It was released in 1989. The global triumph of RCR facilitated several continuations and spin-offs.

Yoshida would stay involved with the series, overseeing the ridiculous NES port of \i>Nekketsu Koko Dodgeball (\i>Super Dodge Ball), before establishing a firm with a large number of former workers from the classic developer Technos Japan. Yoshida started Miracle Kidz! and has since worked on other games that are based in and outside of the Kunio-kun world. It is said that he was working on a new game at the time of his tragic death.
A staple of any NES owner's library, River City Ransom has given brawler fans endless hours of fast-paced action, setting the stage for the series' lasting popularity, which is now acknowledged in the shape of WayForward's well-known River City Girls franchise.
