Rumiko Takahashi's genre-bending, gender-bending action-comedy manga Ranma 1/2 is now being adapted into anime. Although there aren't many details, it seems like a new Ranma project has been formally announced.
I'm afraid I'm not able to translate the announcement for the upcoming Ranma 1/2 anime that was made on Takahashi's official X/Twitter account. Luckily, trustworthy manga news reporter @MangaReporter confirmed that the program is really in production and that further information would be revealed during a live event that is set to begin on July 17 at 6 p.m. Japanese Standard Time (JPT).
For anyone who may not be familiar with the manga, Ranma 1/2 centers on Akane Tendo, a tomboyish martial artist, who learns that her fiancé, Ranma Saotome, is cursed to change into a female anytime he comes into contact with cold water. The series was adapted into two anime series, the first of which ran for just a few episodes. The second series, which ran from 1989 to 1993, was significantly more popular and is still held in high respect among shonen enthusiasts.
A resurrection of Rumiko
This new Ranma 1/2 anime may be similar to other very good anime remakes that were inspired by the works of Rumiko Takahashi. The much-needed revisions to Urusei Yatsura came from David Productions' adaptation of the anime, which updated the story's less-than-ideal parts and modernized the series' setting. Additionally, Yashahime: Princess Half-Demon paved the way for Ranma 1/2, which reintroduced Inuyasha to anime viewers.
Nothing else is known about the changes, if any, that the new Ranma 1/2 anime will make to its original material. But if Urusei Yatsura is any indication, I think it will be excellent.
