Fans of vintage pinball machines, such as myself, will recall Williams' 1980 creation, Black Knight. (Obviously, not to the extent that I recall it when it first came out, but it was in arcades for a long time). Veteran of the business Steve Ritchie created the iconic machine, which gained notoriety for its dual-layered playfield and player-activated "Magna-Save" function.
Williams and Ritchie made a comeback with Black Knight 2000, a super-neon sequel, in 1989. This game went big with lightning effects, vibrant colors, synthetic speech, and an amazing/cheesy cock-rock music. It was tremendously fast-paced and merciless.
Nearly 40 years after the first release of Black Knight, Stern Pinball has now revealed the third installment in the series. Sword of Rage: Black Knight seeks to bring its predecessors' amazing soundtrack, multi-layered playfields, lightning theme, and playfield elements crashing into the present day. Black Knight: Sword of Rage, once again created by Steve Ritchie (fun fact: the original voice of Mortal Kombat's Shao Kahn), will combine the greatest aspects of both traditional and contemporary pinball, while also serving as a constant reminder to us die-hard fans of how darn old we've become.
Black Knight: Sword of Rage will be offered in three different versions, as is customary with Stern machines: Pro, Premium, and a 600-unit Limited Edition run. To be honest, it looks really stunning. With prices ranging from around $6,000 to $9,000, each edition comes with unique in-game features and artwork. Pinball has consistently been a pastime for the wealthy. At Stern Pinball, Black Knight: Sword of Rage is now in development.
