PSA: There are two distinct gear upgrading tracks at Elden Ring that are not competitive.

See what's needed if you're worried about flooding something with upgrade goods.

Understanding how to traverse the Elden Ring The gear upgrading system may be somewhat intimidating.

Since I've been playing these games since the beginning, I completely understand what it's like to be afraid to improve anything for fear of losing important resources. Although it may be the case in the beginning, a number of things later on allay that worry. Let's take a moment to discuss them.

[Note that the name of the game's hub, which you come across very early on, and pictures of products include very little spoilers; the names of the objects have been marked out as a courtesy just in case.]

How to improve the Elden Ring in

To "pump up" weapons like as swords and shields, the easiest method to do so is to go via a blacksmith. You will quickly find them there as part of the main story (if the maiden doesn't whisk you away to the hold at a Site of Grace [bonfire], then you'll get it after beating the first “main” boss right before the castle). They are located at the Roundtable Hold, which is the hub zone that is disconnected from the rest of the world.

In this instance, let's choose a broadsword as your starting basic equipment. You may enhance them using smithing stones. A few smithing stone [1] pieces are needed for the initial upgrade, followed by smithing stone [2] and so forth, up the chain. Throughout the game, stones may be discovered in both random locations and caverns. The level of a smithing stone is usually influenced by the area's power level. Thus, you will discover a lot of smithing stone [1]s in the first zone, and you will be able to acquire [4]s and [5]s and so on in subsequent zones.

You will need to discover caverns in the overworld in order to find them. They usually have openings in the mountainside, , and are located close to mountains. However, the map also shows hazy cave indentations with red circular outlines. These are the best areas to seek for smithing stones, hands down.

A catch exists, and it relates to elite items

That being said, this is the main reason I wrote it. Some products are essentially what I would classify as "elite." To upgrade, they don't need smithing stones; instead, you may strengthen them using somber smithing stones. These have the same nomenclature as smithing stone [1], but they are named with a gloomy prefix, and you usually only require one of them each upgrading level, as opposed to many.

These are more rarer, but they provide an alternative path for upgrading several goods. Put otherwise, they aren't in the same league as your smithing stone upgrades. If you're concerned that you won't have enough smithing stones to upgrade two things at once, you may want to give a melancholy weapon a go (after you've tested and found your fit).

I had no idea whether I would have enough smithing stones for my build, so I utilized a normal smithing stone sword and a somberly upgraded shield to get to endgame.

The late game also allows you to purchase smithing stones

You may "open up" more storefront possibilities at the Roundtable Hold statue (located in the corridor to the left, facing the balcony) by giving it "bells."These can allow players to purchase smithing stones right away in the mid-to-late game. Therefore, you could theoretically acquire the necessary [6]s and then proceed with your upgrade route if you have an abundance of [7] smithing stone [7]s but need some [6]s to get over the hump. These bells are scattered throughout the game, but if you often visit the dungeons of Elden Ring, you'll encounter a good amount of them.
