In-hand: Diablo 4 has a lot of similarities to its D2 predecessors.

You know what? I'm feeling more intrigued now

Diablo is such an odd series: ever from the first game, I've connected with that emotion. I was completely unprepared and ignorant of the peculiar past of the Hellfire. "expansion" until some years after its publication. When Diablo 2 arrived, my little group of DiabloThere were around 20 persons involved in -playing-friends, and it was a true hit that people still play today.

However, Diablo 3 brought about significant changes. The publisher was already facing difficulties, as seen by the Auction House scandal, and Blizzard's reputation as a resilient firm was beginning to erode. Ultimately, D3 sold quite well, but when the team initially revealed Diablo 4 to the public, they had a lot to prove. So far, from my experience playing the game firsthand, I believe they are doing precisely that.

The amount of help you get will depend on how familiar you are with the series.

With three classes (Barbarian, Sorcerer, and Rogue), my build reached level 25 and included Act 1 material that was still under production. Just so you know, I was unable to utilize my own screens or videos since my PS5 copy included a watermark. Now that's out of the way, let's talk about impressions!

Astutely, Diablo 4 seeks to attract gamers with varying playstyles, including ardent enthusiasts, casual players, and newbies. I was immediately given the choice to turn most lessons on or off based on my level of familiarity with the series. You have the option to start using the game's new skill tree structure right away, which is what I did with my "main," the Barbarian (which is something I never really do as a first character in a core Diablo).

With all the specialties available, these are your three options:

  • Barbarian (berserking, bleed-focused, walking arsenal [tank], or unbridled rage [damage])
  • Sorcerer (frost, pyromancy, or shock)
  • Rogue (marksman, imbuements, or traps)

I spent the most of my time playing with the Barbarian, which was a lot of fun. You have the power to jump still, spin around, and add a little spice (more damage or greater usefulness) to each unique skill or ability. With the exception of a dodge button, the majority of your PS5 skills are controlled via the face buttons and triggers by default.

This is now a full-on mechanism in every build (PC included), bringing in Blizzard's time with Diablo 3 on consoles. Charges will accumulate over time (controlled by a cooldown period). The fact that certain adversaries are constructed specifically for this talent caught my attention right away, and it added some intrigue and engagement to many of the otherwise boring bouts.

It's in to respect (alter your build). It has a gold price attached to it and is initially free to do anywhere. Additionally, I had the opportunity to discuss class spread with Ash Sweetring, the Dungeon Producer, Adam "AZ" Jackson, the Associate Game Director, and Joseph Piepiora, the Associate Game Director. I also learnt how the team approached .Diablo 4's concept of the class:

Ontario Online Casino: “I feel like you’ve done a pretty good job of condensing down the D4 classes to a good spread of representation from D1 and D3 – Was there a temptation to add more? How did you decide on the final count and what should be included?”
Joseph Piepiora: “We wanted to make sure as we’re looking to advance the world of Sanctuary…reach back into the series’ past and pluck out these iconic classes to reinterpret. Anyone who’s played recently sees the evolution in the Barbarian…there’s a lot of opportunities for us to take skills and reinterpret them into this new system. In terms of overall count we love the number five (laughs)…but for real, the game has many layers of complexity. Five is a good enough number to hit a good amount of core fantasies, while also giving us enough space on the design side to make things complex…the broader we go the less time we get to spend with each class. There’s an opportunity to grow this roster in the future.”
Adam Jackson: “There’s always a temptation to add more…we love adding more. But like Joe mentioned, a big part of Diablo 4 is mixing the old and the new. You also probably have noticed that these classes have a lot of depth…in order for us to really sell these fantasies and get as deep…and introduce new ways to play, we had to stick to this number to nail the fantasies. As an example the Rogue in Diablo 1 is more fleshed out in Diablo 4.”

The global tier system is followed by difficulty settings

.We're entering the global tiers with the release of Diablo 4. keeps adding additional open world gameplay elements to the franchise. Tier 1 is "Adventurer," which is the lowest and simplest, while tier 2 is "Veteran." At certain monuments (often found in hubs) or on the title screen, you may raise your tier, which unlocks more difficult foes, better loot, and more money and experience points (the standard things). You may easily choose between the two by default (at this phase of the game's development cycle), but the other options are restricted. Here is the whole list that we currently have access to:
  • Nightmare (recommended level 50 – sacred item drops appear, and nightmare dungeons, triggered through nightmare sigils, are unlocked)
  • Hell (recommended level 60 – greater chance of sacred item drops, and rare nightmare sigils)
  • Torment (recommended level 70, ancestral items appear, as well as new unique items)
Players must complete a necessary dungeon at the preceding tier in order to advance to any of these levels, starting with Nightmare, which requires playing on Veteran. As a Diablo player, I switched it to Veteran tier right immediately, and it was doable. It sounds really simple. Attempting to advance at lesser levels will be enjoyable.

It has a vibe similar to Diablo 2

.I noticed some similarities to Diablo 2 as I was playing through the first Act. The tale seems more grim overall, and the artwork is much darker. I was first drawn in by the opening scene, which showed a more defeated and defenseless protagonist (they were huddled in a chilly cave with a dead horse). You'll be taking down animals in a matter of minutes, but in between, you'll see abandoned and dilapidated villages and cottages. Unlike D3, who sprang immediately into the position of the chosen one, NPCs require you to show your value. Lilith, the new main antagonist, also injects some new life into the game since she plays a real role in the plot rather than being reduced to a shadowy figure you only really encounter at the very end.I investigated this further with Associate Game Director Joseph Piepiora after seeing this take:

Ontario Online Casino: “Playing through the current build, I would probably describe the theme, more so than anything else, as ‘dire.’ In D4, my first character started out huddled in a cave and had to get hands-on help from NPCs: definitely a different vibe from D3. Obviously at some point I’ll take down Lilith, and/or maybe a surprise Diablo. Will that dire theming maintain throughout the game, even as you level up? Either way, was striking that balance tough?”
Piepiora: “The story of the Fractured Peaks is the prologue, and the story is starting at a low point. We want that to set the tone in how players engage in the world. In terms of whether we keep that tone…the tone will change a little as you go. I don’t even want to talk about it. But I will say as the player gets more powerful they get slightly more agency in the story, and develop more relationships. At no point does Diablo 4 cease being a gothic horror game. The character is a hero, and they’re using world-shaking power to rise against unstoppable evil. That power fantasy is at the heart of Diablo 4.”

There are quite a few tasks to accomplish.Searching the Act 1 map, I found a lot of micro-dungeons and sporadic encounters/activities. The map seems considerably larger now that there are more of the traditional "elite jumbled up ability" opponent kinds. In our interview, Dungeon Producer Ash Sweetring said that players may need to dedicate "around 45-50 hours" to finishing the campaign alone, and there will be plenty of additional work to be done.A lot of "what ifs" remain in Diablo 4. The developers reiterated that only cosmetics would be available for premium purchases, but we've heard that before. Additionally, Diablo 4 must continue to build tension and make things exciting from a gameplay perspective. The final goal, which was once again emphasized at this press conference, must also succeed. After my experience with it, I'll be more likely to be there on day one, but we'll see.
