Delicious in Dungeon transforms fantasy dungeon exploration into a filling lunch.

Everyone who has played an RPG, I'd like to believe, has probably imagined what its wondrous creatures might look like on a plate. I'll show you a liar if you attempt to show me someone who hasn't considered eating a Pokémon. And Delicious in Dungeon, which just made its Netflix premiere, perfectly captures the spirit of audacious adventure.

Based on the manga Delicious in Dungeon (or Dungeon Meshi) by Ryōko Kui, Kill la Kill and Little Witch Academia studio Trigger is the driving force behind the Netflix anime adaptation. That could be sufficient to pique the interest of anime aficionados.

A group of adventurers led by Laios, Chilchuck, and Marcille are attempting to navigate a mystery maze. It all began when a catacomb appeared where the ground divided. From there, a man dragged himself forward and said that he was the king of a realm that had once been golden but had been submerged by a crazy wizard. He vanished into dust, leaving a vow to give his riches to the first person who vanquish the sorcerer.Dungeon-diving naturally became a very popular career. However, during an especially fierce battle with a gigantic dragon, Laios and his companions are left with very little, and his sister Falin will soon be eaten by the monster. Before the worst occurs, the party, down a few members and out of luck, must figure out a way to rally and rescue its member.

On its own, that's a respectable setup. However, what distinguishes Delicious in Dungeon ?Thus, being appetising is more than merely a worthwhile goal. It's what they learn while descending. Why not mix eating and killing monsters if you're going to do both anyway?

Return of meat to the menu

Food has long been a resource in role-playing games used to pace growth. The third Baldur's Gate is a recent example, where a particular number of supplies is needed for a complete extended rest. Frodo and Sam discuss how they would ration their lembas bread to last them the whole trek into Mordor in The Lord of the Rings. But maintaining a lengthy voyage is expensive. The first expenditure is buying food in bulk. Additionally, the group needs to transport their supplies wherever they go. The Delicious in Dungeon party's sword-and-shield knight captain, Laios, offers a simple fix: just devour the creatures.

The rogue Chilchuck and wizard Marcille find it repugnant at first, but it's also the only way to escape the dungeon and save Falin from being eaten by a dragon. The outside-shot begins to make more sense after meeting Senshi, a dwarven warrior who is shockingly knowledgable about how to hunt, gather, and prepare meals from subterranean critters. It also makes logic. It is often the case that dungeons are shown as miniature ecosystems, home to living creatures rather than merely areas where they hang out and wait for adventurers to arrive. It follows that in order to thrive in this little, enclosed environment, something must consume something else. The explorers may create a new link in the food chain if any of it is edible.

On-site acquisition

Obtaining such items is the difficult part, of course. That's what made Delicious in Dungeon so charming.thus far, as the audience gets to see the pranks the group does to get the ingredients they need to prepare meals. Early on in the game, Laios uses a sword to pierce a fractured wall and retrieve a scorpion from a hole in the dungeon.Later, when dealing with man-eating plants, the team learns about fertilisation and the reasons for plant fruiting. It's a great combination of fantasy monster design and foraging expertise—it's as if your DM is a food scientist who also happened to forget to eat supper before the session.

When Senshi pulls out the utensils, it's time to start cooking. Even though they're all based on fantastical creatures, the foods have relatable counterparts. For instance, a tart or a hot pot. According to what I've read thus far in the manga, the gathering explores omelettes, meats, and other foods.Furthermore, a surprisingly large amount of thought is given to how various fantasy creatures may be transformed into palatable meals. The first episode's slime stands out in especially as it demonstrates how Senshi has created a unique technique for keeping the slime dry while travelling. Everything has been considered here, including biology, planning, and practicality. All is not well, however. As much an action or cookery program as it is a comedy, Delicious in Dungeon often puts Marcille in dangerous circumstances. Laios, however, hardly disguises his curiosity in the prison from his cooking. It's unclear whether his curiosity stems from his want to learn more about these beasts or from his desire to actually cook them.

Following the celebration is enjoyable in any case. I was also pleasantly pleased when I tried the English dub, since I usually choose selections with subtitles. Emily Rudd in the live-action Netflix series Nami Damien Haas plays a fantastic Laios, and One Piece, as Marcille, puts on a strong performance. Additionally, SungWon Cho is an excellent candidate for Senshi's voice. Sincerely, there's no need to apply the famous Sub v. Dub dispute in this case.

A delightful starter

I was a little reluctant to write this episode up since we've only been through one so far. After all, you don't want to eat too many appetisers, and the manga for Delicious in Dungeon has received some excellent reviews. To be honest, one of the nicest things about the anime adaptation is that it inspired me to eventually read the original work. Finally, I would say that this is .a little sluggish in cooking. Enjoying the spaciousness that a fantasy dungeon crawl gives, Delicious in Dungeon has some stakes, but the action is undoubtedly attractive. Their problem, after all, is that they have to make the lengthy trek back down the dungeon, which requires preparation and strategy. Early on in the series, the core premise has been heavily explored, but with less intensity than in a more battle-focused series.

In that sense, it's kind of like Frieren , but maybe in a different manner. It's good to see that both series are approaching the fantasy setting in a respectable, non-isekai way. And the trip is really important to both of them. Even if they have lofty objectives in sight, they will face daily obstacles along the way, such as monsters or their stomachs. Therefore, Delicious in Dungeon is definitely that if you're seeking for anything with a fantasy background and a very, very original idea. I'm interested to see where the series goes as the group explores the dungeon further, but its rich environment and meticulous attention to detail keep me hooked on finishing the story. This season, it will be available on Netflix, with new episodes premiering every Thursday.
