The greatest narrative turns ever in video games

Many of us grew up thinking that video games wouldn't have very interesting plots, much less ones with amazing surprises.

The best plot surprise is that excellent game plots and plot twists are nothing new, despite the fact that video games have just lately blossomed into an art form capable of including fantastic narratives and character arcs. Let's examine the most brilliant narrative turns in video game history.

The theme of Bloodborne is aliens.

After over 20 seasons of Ancient Aliens, if there's one thing we know for sure, It's because in real life, aliens are never really alien. However, while we eradicate a plague of ruthless humans in Bloodborne, we spend the most of the game believing we're playing a Victorian London equivalent of Leon S. Kennedy—but that's not the case at all. What almost destroyed the planet of Bloodborne? is the addiction that all have to "old blood." That's not a fancy way of saying that blood is aged; rather, it refers to what they term the blood of "old ones," cosmic creatures whose peculiar body fluids have left humanity utterly enthralled. In typical Lovecraftian manner, we are unaware of the motivations of the cosmic beings. We are aware of "The Hunt" that we carry out in Bloodborne. occurs not to aid the people but to fulfill the requirements of the Moon Presence, the ancient one that controls every aspect of the Hunter's Dream.

In Metal Gear Solid, Solid Snake is the main weapon used by the enemies.

There aren't many games that teach players more humility than the original Solid Metal Gear.. Solid Snake is the world's greatest spy, as Hideo Kojima, ever the master of deceit, repeatedly tells players throughout the game. He's correct about Snake's ability to move stealthily, but Snake acknowledges this early in the game and calls himself a pawn. The problem lies in the fact that Snake is really unknowingly working for the enemy, even though we regard him as a tool of the US government. Snake plays his wicked brother like a violin and ultimately saves the day, but not before providing the terrorists inhabiting Shadow Moses with the ability to launch a nuclear attack.

In Soul Reaver 2, Kain is really on our side

.We dedicate the whole of the initial Soul Reaver attempting to get vengeance on Kain for condemning the main character to an endless state of suffering, only for him to flee just before the game's conclusion—the moment when the game's ultimate blow is delivered.Shortly after Soul Reaver 2 starts, we find out that we have always been a part of Kain's larger scheme, in which the protagonist's death was never intended to be the ultimate punishment but rather as a crucial method to preserve the planet. Is this a scam? Yes, without a doubt. First Soul Reaver was supposed to conclude with Raziel murdering Kain and bringing the tale to a close, but financial limitations forced the game's conclusion to be shortened. That's fortunate since this unexpected turn of events made the otherwise unremarkable vengeance story much more ambitious over the whole series.

The identity of Knights of the Old Republic's Darth Revan

The amnesiac main character trope is a favorite among RPG authors because it allows players to fill in the blanks with their own narrative, saving them the trouble of creating a particular history for the character. Players are tricked into believing they are in a plot similar to the original KOTOR until they learn that the Jedi have wiped their character's memories. Why? Because the Jedi are using you to get a weapon you concealed in your previous existence, and you are truly the menacing Sith from the narrative, Darth Revan. When composing a Star Wars video game with a significant storyline surprise, BioWare had high expectations to meet, and it is deserving of the Rebel Alliance's award for crafting what is maybe an even more daring twist for Star Wars .Old Republic Knights.

Returning in System Shock 2

is SHODAN.GLADoS was preceded by SHODAN. The primary opponent of the first System Shock is the malevolent AI; in the sequel, just the unpleasant memories are present. We make a big deal with a character later on in the game, only to find out that she is really dead and that SHODAN was the one who played her. While the narrative aspect of the moment is strong, its seamless integration with real-time gameplay is what makes it stand out as one of the greatest in gaming history.Should you find it unsettling, bear in mind that the creators initially intended for the conclusion of System Shock to lead players to believe that Shodan had seized control of their computer.

Discovering in Portal

that "the cake is a lie"For the last, say, forty years, finding out that an AI is really bad hasn't been a shocking revelation. Real or imaginary, I'm very convinced that 99 percent of AIs are bad. The revelation in Portal isn't about GLaDOS seeming kind-hearted the whole time. It's because she acts extremely questionable throughout the whole game, only to suddenly be exposed as wicked in a terrible and humorous moment. No other malicious AI will ever exist like GLaDOS.

Discovering Wheatley's shortcomings in Portal 2

Portal 2 takes players through a story that resembles a lot of the elements from the first game, but with Wheatley as an ally this time. Although Wheatley might seem a little distant, he is a great aid in the effort to remove the malicious GLaDOS from the system. Not even Wheatley's mischievousness or sheer evilness is the issue here. He's an idiot, that's the issue. You ask, how idiotic is that? He was designed to be the world's stupidest artificial intelligence (AI) by the most brilliant brains. Since he excels at being stupid, it should not be shocking that the moment the now-deposed GLaDOS makes fun of him for being utterly unable of maintaining order, he demonstrates her point.

Finding out that we had been assisting G Man in Half-Life Alyx

The folks at Valve are aware of the public's need for more Gordon Freeman, which is why they have the Half-Life Alyx players. setting off on a mission to save the series' protagonist from the nefarious Combine's grasp. We don't see the shadow of a guy carrying a briefcase until the very last moment, when we manage to free Gordon from what seems to be a jail. What on earth is that? Gordon would never carry anything so important to company. This is because the most enigmatic and potentially evil character in the series, the G Man, was released instead of Gordon after we were duped into believing that he was.

James Sunderland's real story in Silent Hill 2

Had you engaged in the first Silent Hill game Prior to entering Silent Hill 2, you probably assumed that you would be exploring a spooky town that was formerly home to monsters. The good news is that although the people living in Silent Hill are still terrible, they may not be the worst creatures in the area. The putative protagonist of the tale, James Sunderland, really did the worst thing imaginable to the one he loved the most. Instead of portraying him as a villain from the beginning, the game shows us a damaged guy who may never fully get over his guilt.A Big Daddy and Little Sister need from BioShock

What "Would you kindly" means in Bioshock

In first-person shooter games, the majority of characters usually obey orders or hunt out more foes to eliminate. Neither option has ever been criticized by a player. Atlas is a friendly guy who always asks us to do something and ends the conversation with us by saying "would you kindly" in the original Bioshock. You could assume that he's simply trying to be kind, or that's how people in the 1960s, who Bioshock is attempting to mimic, talked all the time, but that's not the case. This is due to the fact that Atlas is really a skilled scam artist who has "programmed" the main character to follow instructions as long as he hears the phrase "would you kindly" beforehand. Not only is this a brilliant narrative turn, but it's also a lighthearted jab at the often mute and careless lead characters in the genre.

Tales From the Borderlands

's enigmatic strangerThe protagonists of Tales From Borderlands are first seen being held captive by a stranger wearing a mask, who charges them with treason. The majority of the game then consists of flashbacks that transport us to the exact moment of their kidnapping. It would appear that knowing everything that happened before would make it easier for us to predict who the stranger is, yet it seems like each new scene makes it harder.I suggest that you play this hidden treasure and figure out the stranger's identity for yourself. It's perhaps the most cunningly inventive surprise I've ever seen in any kind of media.
